A house by the sea in Vathy, Sifnos island, Cyclades. The building is a former traditional pottery now transformed to three housing units.
It is a typical cycladic stone building. The surface of the house is 45m2.
The design focused on the unique relationship of the building with the sea. The building is almost in the sea. When inside the building the feeling of actually being in the sea is present.
The owners asked for a summer residence which would fulfill their summer house requirements. This is an actual summer refuge .
The design challenge was the geometry and the size of an old existing building being by the sea or even in the sea.
The house was oranized in two zones; a more public one with sitting, eating, working, meeting area and a more private one with sleeping, relaxing, being alone area. The two zones are articulated aroun a central volume, which consists of all the necessary uses of kitchen and bathroom and has the role of an in-between filter zone area.
The relation to the sea is direct from all the housing areas and it can be controlled by intermediate semi-transparent or opaque elements, whenever needed.
Furniture and equipment use traditional and contemporary elements and are designed to foster flexibility and the sense of spaciousness.
